A Medicinal Cannabis Card in Barbados is an official authorization that confirms a patient has been approved by a licensed medical practitioner to use cannabis for specific medical conditions. Individuals must be  18 years or older  to apply.

How to Register for your Card?

Complete Evaluation Form

The patient can complete the online patient evaluation form here.

Document Verification

The patient will upload a copy of their ID/Passport for verification.

Payment & Submission to Doctor

Upon submission of your financial details through the online application, your application will be forwarded to the Doctor of your choice for their recommendation.

Recommendation Issuance

The doctor conducts the evaluation. If the patient is deemed eligible, a prescription will be issued and sent via email. If the patient is not eligible, a notification will be sent via email.

Submission to BMCLA

The information is submitted to the Barbados Medicinal Cannabis Licensing Authority for printing of the Meds card.

Meds Card Retrieval Options

The cards can be retrieved at the office of the Barbados Medicinal Cannabis Licensing Authority (BMCLA), Island Therapeutics and Island Naturals.

Get A Prescription

Patients in Barbados can only access medicinal cannabis through a prescription issued by a licensed medical practitioner. This prescription must be filled by a licensed pharmacist, who is legally permitted to dispense medicinal cannabis only upon submission of a valid prescription and a form of identification by the patient or, where applicable, a caregiver.

Cannabis may be prescribed for a range of medical conditions, based on an assessment between the patient and their doctor.

Upon submission of the evaluation form, it will be evaluated by a doctor of your choice.

Please note that only if the doctor determines that medicinal cannabis is an appropriate treatment will they issue a recommendation.

Approval & Issuance

Once approved, a prescription is issued and can be filled by a licensed pharmacist upon presentation of valid identification.

Patients can then obtain medicinal cannabis through a licensed therapeutic facility, dispensary, or pharmacy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a minor be prescribed medical cannabis?

Yes, but only under strict medical supervision and with parental or guardian consent.

According to the Barbados Medicinal Cannabis Industry Act, 2019 the parent or guardian of a patient who is a minor shall obtain a certificate in writing from a medical practitioner certifying that the use of medicinal cannabis is necessary in the case of that minor, and the parent or guardian shall consent in writing to the use of medicinal cannabis for the treatment of the minor.

The Act also states that a parent or legal guardian of a patient who is a minor shall be deemed to be the caregiver for that minor unless that parent or legal guardian designates another person, or a person is designated by an order of the Court. Any person who is under the age of 18 years shall not be designated as a caregiver.

Can my Medical Cannabis Card be used in other Caribbean territories?

No. The Barbados Medical Cannabis Card is only valid in Barbados.

Does a Medical Cannabis Card mean I can smoke cannabis in public?

No public consumption of cannabis is prohibited, even with a medicinal cannabis card. The forms of medicinal cannabis that can be used are tablet, capsule, liquid, gas, oil paste, spray, gelatin and vape (oil or dry flower – only available form a therapeutic facility).

Does the Medical Cannabis Card allow me to have unlimited cannabis on my person?

No. There are legal possession limits. Patients must adhere to the prescribed dosage and quantity as recommended by their doctor

How long am I eligible to have a Medical Cannabis Card?

The card is valid for one year, after which it must be renewed.

How long does it take to access a Medical Cannabis Card?

Processing times may vary, but typically it takes two to three business days after a doctor’s recommendation and successful application.

If I am denied a Medical Cannabis Card, can I reapply?

Yes, you can reapply. However, approval is based on a doctor’s recommendation.

If I am eligible for a Medical Cannabis Card, where do I collect my card?

The cards are picked up at the Barbados Medicinal Cannabis Licensing Authority, Island Naturals or Island Therapeutics.

If I’m a non-citizen, can I obtain a Medical Cannabis Card?

Yes, non-citizens may apply, provided they meet the eligibility criteria and receive a recommendation from a registered Barbadian doctor.

To renew my Medical Cannabis Card, do I need to go through the portal process again?

Yes, renewal requires re-submission through the official portal, including an updated doctor’s recommendation.

What are the dose limitations?

Dosage is determined by the prescribing doctor based on the patient’s medical condition and needs. In circumstances where a prescription by a medical practitioner requires repeated usage over a period of 3 months, a pharmacy or therapeutic facility shall not dispense to that patient more than 30-day supply of individual does at a time.

What is the cost of a Medical Cannabis Card?

The overall cost is  BBD$100.

What is the cost to renew or replace a Medical Cannabis Card?

Renewal and replacement fees are separate and may differ. The cost is approximately BBD $50.

What is the purpose of the Medical Cannabis Card?

The card allows eligible patients to legally access and use medical cannabis in Barbados under the guidance of a registered medical practitioner. The card protects patients form legal penalties related to cannabis possession, as long as they’re using it in accordance with the law and medical guidance.
